Why doesn't the Raspberry Pi respond to keystrokes?

Raspberry Pi's failure to respond to keystrokes most often indicates a problem with the operating system, the power supply, a faulty storage medium or a non-functioning input device, i.e. the keyboard or its connection.

Diagnostics - from the keyboard to the system

As a first step, it is a good idea to make sure that the keyboard is properly connected and in working order. The Raspberry Pi uses standard USB ports, but with a weaker power supply or multiple peripherals connected, you may find that the USB ports stop working due to lack of power. If the power supply is unable to supply sufficient current (e.g. less than 5V at 3-5A), the USB ports may be cut off by the RP1 power circuit, making it impossible to operate the keyboard. Another cause may be a corrupted or incorrectly formatted microSD card, from which the operating system is booted. If the system has not loaded correctly, the Raspberry Pi may operate in a stalled or suspended state very early in the boot process - before the USB-enabled controllers have loaded. In this case, the device will not respond to any keyboard inputs, even though the power supply is working.

Problems with the graphics system or terminal

If the Raspberry Pi boots but is unresponsive to keyboard only in graphics mode (e.g. Raspberry Pi OS desktop), there is a possible problem with graphics server (Wayland or X11). A misconfiguration of the environment, too high a resolution or corrupted configuration files can cause the interface to be unresponsive to input events. Another case is when the system is running in headless mode, i.e. without a graphical environment, and expects to log in via a terminal (e.g. via SSH). In such a setup, if the screen does not display the login interface, the user may mistakenly believe that the device is not responding to the keys - even though it is working correctly, only in headless GUI mode.

Hardware and configuration errors

The Raspberry Pi 5 has made several changes to port support, such as the RP1 bridge responsible for USB communication, which may require updated controllers and boot software (EEPROM). Older operating systems or images prepared for the Pi 4 may not include full support for Pi 5 hardware, resulting in unresponsive USB devices. Therefore, always ensure that you download the latest version of the operating system and install it correctly. Problems can also result from misconfiguration of the Raspberry Pi itself, e.g. modified settings in the config.txt or cmdline.txt files that disable some Peripherals or introduce boot modes not supported by the device in question.

How to solve the problem?

First, it is a good idea to test the keyboard on another computer. If it works, test the Raspberry Pi with a different power supply and prepare a new microSD card with the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS using the official Raspberry Pi Imager Tools. If there are further problems, diagnostic signals such as patterns of flashing green ACT Diodes, which indicate at which stage the device stops booting, may be helpful.
