Can the Raspberry Pi boot from USB, SSD or network (without a microSD card)?

Yes. Modern Raspberry Pi models, such as the Pi 4 and Pi 5, allow the operating system to be fully bootable from a USB drive, SSD media or over a network, without the need for a microSD card. However, this requires a properly configured bootloader and a compatible file system on the chosen media.

How does booting from USB and SSD work?

Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 have a programmable bootloader stored in EEPROM, which manages the boot order and boot method. By default, older versions of the Pi 4 boot from a microSD card, but with a one-time bootloader update it is possible to set up booting from the USB 3.0 port. This allows you to plug in an SSD or flash drive and use it as the main system media. Raspberry Pi 5 additionally supports the PCIe 2.0 interface, which allows high-performance NVMe drives to be connected via special HAT-type adapters. Once the system is installed on such a drive, it is possible to fully boot the Raspberry Pi without the use of a microSD card - the system boots from the SSD exactly as in a classic desktop computer.

What does booting over the network look like?

The Raspberry Pi also supports what is known as network boot, which is booting over a local area network (LAN), without any physical media. This feature is particularly useful in environments with a large number of devices (e.g. educational classrooms, laboratories or embedded systems) where the operating system is stored on a remote server. To use this feature, you need to configure a TFTP-enabled DHCP server (or NFS) and prepare the operating system image on the server accordingly. The Raspberry Pi, once booted, will download data from the network and load the system into RAM. However, this requires pre-configuration of the bootloader, which must have network boot enabled.

How to set the alternative boot mode?

To change the boot mode on the Raspberry Pi, use the Tools raspi-config or Raspberry Pi Imager. In the latter case, the user can prepare a special "bootloader recovery" image that updates the EEPROM and sets the desired boot source order (e.g. USB → SD → network). The update is a one-off and stored permanently in the motherboard's memory. It is worth remembering that not every USB drive is compatible with the Raspberry Pi bootloader. SSDs based on SATA or NVMe chips and Pendrives from well-known manufacturers work best. The use of USB hubs or passive Adapters can interfere with the boot process, especially with insufficient power supply.
