Can a memory stick damage itself, without cause?

Yes, a flash drive can fail seemingly 'for no reason', even if it has not been subjected to mechanical trauma or misuse. This is most often the result of internal wear and tear on the flash memory, a faulty controller or poor quality electronic components. Although to the user this may look like a sudden failure for no apparent reason, from a technical point of view such failures have specific causes related to the limitations of the technology.

Flash memory wear and write cycles

Pendrives use NAND flash memory, which has a limited lifetime defined by the number of program and erase (P/E - Program/Erase) cycles. Each memory cell can only be written to and erased a certain number of times - typically from 1,000 cycles for low-cost TLC memory, to 10,000 or more for more expensive MLC chips. Once this limit is exceeded, the cells become unstable and start generating errors, which can lead to sudden data loss or media failure. Some Pendrives do not have proper write management (e.g. wear leveling), causing some areas of memory to be exploited much faster than others. As a result, even with moderate use, the media may fail sooner than the technical specifications predict.

Controller failures and latent defects in the pendrive

Another source of failure can be failure of the NAND controller, the microprocessor that manages communication between the computer and the memory. It is the controller that is responsible for recognition of the device by the system, allocation of memory blocks and error correction. If this chip fails - which can happen suddenly and without warning - the pendrive ceases to be visible in the system and the data becomes unreachable. A typical symptom is the message "Insert drive into USB Actuators" or the lack of any response after connecting the media. Controller failures can result from manufacturing errors, surges, poor solder quality or media overheating. Unfortunately, such failures are difficult to predict and usually end in complete loss of data access, even if the flash memory itself remains intact.

Effect of component quality

Many problems arise from the poor quality of materials used in the manufacture of cheap flash drives, especially models of unknown brands available for sale online. False capacity declarations, uncertified controllers and lack of quality testing mean that failures can occur even after a few uses. In such cases, the flash drive may initially work correctly, only to suddenly stop responding or report file system errors after a few writes. Some low-cost models use flash memory made from so-called 'production rejects', i.e. chips that do not meet industry standards. Their durability and reliability are incomparably lower than in products from reputable brands. What this means for the user is that the pendrive may appear to work, but is structurally prone to failure from the outset. From an operational point of view, the best protection against data loss is to avoid storing important files exclusively on a memory stick, to make regular backups and to choose media of proven quality and durability. Although a memory stick may look like a stable device, its actual reliability depends on the precision of its design and the quality of its electronics, which are not always visible from the outside.
