Yes, pendrive can be password protected, using either software or hardware solutions to protect data from unauthorised access. Depending on the method used, encryption can be implemented by special software installed on the computer or by the pendrive itself equipped with a dedicated security controller.
The most available solution is software encryption, which involves encrypting the contents of the pendrive using a cryptographic algorithm (e.g. AES-256) and protecting it with a password. On Windows systems, the user can use the built-in Tools BitLocker To Go, which enables encryption of any USB drive. Once activated, access to the data requires a password - both on Windows and macOS (with limited compatibility). Other solutions include third-party software such as VeraCrypt or Rohos Mini Drive, which allow encrypted volumes to be created on part of a memory stick. The user can specify which part of the memory is to be publicly accessible and which part is to be protected. However, such systems are dependent on the presence of the appropriate software on the computer, which may limit their usefulness in corporate environments or on computers without administrator privileges. Software-based encryption has the advantage of flexibility - it can be used on almost any media, regardless of model or manufacturer. The disadvantages, on the other hand, are a lower level of security with weak passwords and vulnerability if the computer is already infected with malware.
A more advanced and secure solution is hardware encryption, available on specialised flash drives equipped with a physical encryption chip. These devices perform encryption in real time without the involvement of a computer. Data is automatically encrypted on write and decrypted on read, and access is protected by a password, PIN or even a fingerprint reader. Some models have a numeric keypad on the enclosure, so that unlocking is done even before the media is connected to the USB port. Others have a dedicated authentication application that runs independently of the operating system. Hardware encryption is resistant to brute-force attacks (as a rule, after several unsuccessful attempts, the data is automatically deleted or the media is permanently locked). Pendrives that are FIPS 140-2 certified or compliant with GDPR and RODO standards are used in corporate, medical and military environments, where data security is crucial. Their main disadvantage is their price - up to several times that of regular media.
Not every memory stick can be encrypted by hardware. Only models with the appropriate Integrated circuits allow this functionality. Software encryption, on the other hand, can be used on any media, but requires conscious action by the user and trust in the software used. If the password to an encrypted flash drive is lost - regardless of the method - the data is usually not recoverable, which is a feature of this type of security. Therefore, when using the password protection function, it is necessary to keep a backup copy of the data in a safe place and to be aware of the consequences associated with the lack of access. Encryption increases security, but at the same time requires responsible management.
