No, a flash drive is not a medium that can be fully trusted for long-term storage of important data. Although a convenient and widely used solution for file transfer, the flash memory used in flash drives has limited durability, susceptibility to logical and physical damage and poor environmental resistance.
The basis of flash drives is NAND flash memory, whose cells have a limited number of write cycles. This is typically between 1,000 and 10,000 cycles for the cheaper TLC (Triple-Level Cell) type chips. Once this number is exceeded, data can be written unstably and cells degrade. This phenomenon is partially masked by the wear leveling technique, i.e. spreading the writes across the entire surface of the media, but it does not eliminate physical wear on the memory. In addition to this, flash memory undergoes the phenomenon of so-called data retention, i.e. the gradual loss of electrical charge in the cells. For consumer flash drives, the duration of safe unpowered data storage can be as short as a few years, and even shorter for heavily used media. Some data may be corrupted or partially lost, with no obvious symptoms until it is read out.
Pendrives rely not only on the flash drive itself, but also on the USB controller, which is responsible for managing writing, addressing and communication with the computer. Cheap models often use simplistic or unstable controllers that can cause write errors, sudden disconnections and, in extreme cases, even complete loss of data access. In some cases, the media is no longer recognised by the operating system, even though the data is physically still in NAND. A common problem is also false declarations of capacity in counterfeit memory sticks, which report e.g. 128 GB but are physically only 8 GB, leading to data being overwritten and irreversibly lost. This type of fraud can be detected with specialised software, but is invisible in everyday use.
Flash drives do not offer data loss protection mechanisms, such as redundancy (RAID), hardware error correction (ECC in the classic sense) or corruption detection mechanisms. If a write error or power interruption occurs during copying, the data may be partially written or logically corrupted. In such a case, the file system structure may also fail, making it impossible to access all the files on the device. Pendrives also have no internal moisture, temperature or voltage sensors, so they do not protect data from harmful external conditions. Storing the media in a hot car, in a trouser pocket or with strong electromagnetic fields can accelerate data degradation or lead to physical damage. A flash drive can be a convenient tool for moving data, but should not be considered a trusted, long-term storage solution. Key files should be regularly backed up to more reliable media, such as hard drives, NAS servers or the cloud, and covered by regular backup mechanisms.
