Barometer is a precise measuring device used to determine atmospheric pressure values, utilized in meteorology, environmental engineering, aviation, and navigation. Its primary function is to enable the analysis of air pressure changes over time, allowing for weather forecasting and assessment of atmospheric conditions in a given area. From a technical standpoint, barometers can be divided into different types depending on the operating principle, including mercury, aneroid, electronic, or piezoelectric.
In a classic mercury barometer, the measurement is based on the height of a mercury column maintained by atmospheric pressure in a glass tube, whereas in an aneroid barometer, a flexible vacuum capsule is used, which deforms under the influence of external pressure changes. Modern systems use semiconductor pressure sensors that convert membrane element deformations into an electrical signal proportional to the pressure. These types of sensors are often integrated with microprocessor systems and can perform calibration, temperature compensation, and real-time data transmission functions.
In the context of technical applications, barometers are an essential component of environmental monitoring systems, autonomous devices, and meteorological stations, and their measurement accuracy and stability are crucial for the reliability of the obtained data.
