IP degree of protection - definition

IP (ingress protection) rating is a standardised classification that defines the level of protection of an electrical or electronic equipment enclosure against the penetration of solids, dust and liquids, including water. The IP marking system is defined by IEC 60529 and consists of the letters 'IP' and two digits. The first characterises resistance to the penetration of physical objects and dust, while the second refers to resistance to the effects of moisture, water or liquids under specific exposure conditions.

The use of the IP designation is indispensable in the context of the design, manufacture and operation of equipment used in exposed environments, such as industrial installations, Building Automation, lighting systems, laboratory equipment or Measuring Instruments. Adequate sealing protects active components from mechanical damage, short circuits, corrosion and failures due to moisture or dust, which translates into an extended device life cycle and increased user safety.

Interpretation of the IP code requires knowledge of assigned numerical values that define specific test conditions, such as water pressure, exposure time, particle size or immersion depth.
