ASCII - definition

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a widely adopted character encoding standard developed in the United States during the 1960s to standardize the representation of textual data in digital systems. It is based on a 7-bit binary code, allowing for the encoding of 128 characters, including Latin alphabet letters, digits, punctuation marks, symbols, and control characters.

The ASCII standard enables communication between electronic devices—such as computers, terminals, printers, and modems—by assigning each character a unique numerical value. This uniform encoding allows text to be stored, transmitted, and interpreted consistently, regardless of hardware or operating system. The original ASCII version includes only characters used in English, which limits its applicability for other national languages.

To address these limitations, several ASCII extensions were developed, including 8-bit encodings (e.g., ISO 8859-1) and later multibyte standards such as Unicode, which allow representation of characters from various languages and scripts. Nevertheless, ASCII remains the foundation of modern text encoding systems and continues to be widely used in device communication, network protocols, text files, and programming—where it frequently serves as the basis for defining characters and performing string operations.
