Unicode - definition

Unicode is a universal character encoding standard developed to provide a uniform way to represent, process and exchange text across different natural languages and writing systems at a global level. It was designed as an extension of previous spatially limited encoding schemes such as ASCII, and is capable of unambiguously representing the millions of characters, symbols and glyphs used in modern and historical language systems, including the Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Chinese, Devanagari or Korean Hangul alphabets.

The Unicode standard uses code planes, in which characters are assigned to unique code points stored as hexadecimal numbers. The most common encoding implementations are UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32, which differ in the way data is represented in memory and transmission, as well as the degree of spatial efficiency. Unicode defines not only the character set, but also rules for normalisation, sorting, character property classification, type direction and text rendering.

The use of Unicode enables global interoperability of software and information systems, regardless of geographic location, which is essential for international digital communication, natural language processing, databases and web and mobile applications.
