Coil wires are a special group of wires in electrical installations. They are successfully used in automotive industry or ICT as a part of power supply systems. However, their primary application is the production of transformers, inductors, and electromagnets. A catalogue of coil wires available at TME contains different types of wires adapted to electrical installations operating in various conditions.
Good electrical conductivity is ensured by wires made of pure metals, especially copper. A coil wire has its core made of high-quality copper annealed and electrolytically refined during production, which differentiates it from other wires. This is especially important in the production of inductors, as their inductance depends on the number and thickness of turns. With coil wires, more turns can be wound, which makes the inductor more useful without changing its dimensions. Apart from that, high-quality anaerobic copper is also used to manufacture coil wires used in hydrogen-cooled generators or motors. The main distinguishing feature of a coil wire is the thin insulation layer made of enamel applied onto the copper core. TME offers copper coil wires from SYNFLEX, coated with two different insulation layers, which allows them to be used in particularly harsh conditions. They work excellent in propulsion systems, transformers, or power tools exposed to high temperatures or corrosive substances.
Coil wires available at TME are selected based on many different factors, such as wire thickness and shape, operating temperature range, or insulation class.
Coil wires with small diameter usually have a round cross-section. They are primarily used in manufacturing transducers or in applications requiring compact size of components. Coil wires with larger diameters have cross-sections in the shape of a square or even a hexagon, which allows for a more efficient transport. Also, such shapes ensure better thermal conductivity between subsequent turns. TME Catalogue comprises coil wires with a wide range of diameters from renowned manufacturers, as well as bespoke products prepared on request.
Coil wires have the so-called operating temperature range. This is the temperature of the wire after 20,000 hours of usage. The lower the temperature, the longer the operating time (ca. twice for every 10°C).
The insulation of the wire with copper core protects it against harmful environmental conditions. On top of that, it also works as a protection against electro-static discharges caused by free electrons in the insulator. There are three types of insulation, which differ in terms of thickness. It should be mentioned that in order to connect two coil wires together or attach a wire to an existing installation, the insulation has to be removed. Getting rid of the enamel is usually troublesome. That’s why on request, we can adapt coil wires to our customers’ needs. Prices are negotiable in case of large orders.
Due to the use of coil wires, the inductance of electrical coils was improved while saving the material and improving their overall quality. In propulsion systems using these wires, lower energy losses were observed. In the past, energy losses were caused by coil resistance. Apart from that, the abovementioned propulsion systems now generate considerably less heat during the conversion of electrical energy to kinetic energy.
Our offer comprises a wide selection of coil wires characterised by high quality of materials, wide temperature ranges, and a broad selection of wire diameters.
