CMI&A – a short description

What does CMI&A stand for?

The acronym CMI&A stands for Control Measuring Instruments and Automation. It is used to describe systems that monitor all processes and, if needed, control them. Until recently, this was only important in industrial facilities and during production processes. However, now, such systems are also installed in modern housing, where their task is to control electrical energy, heat supply, sometimes also the quality of air and comfort in rooms. The system which manages temperature, ventilation, and sometimes, even air ionization or cleaning options, is called HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning). It is very important in modern buildings where it is not possible to open windows.

What does a Control Measuring Instruments and Automation system comprise?

The full version of what the acronym stands for alone gives us a picture of what this system is and what it comprises. A CMI&A system includes: sensors, gauges, recorders, transducers and other similar devices whose task is to measure the status of processes in real time, conditions in a room, consumption of various utilities, and also test any needed parameter which is important for the owner of the building or a production or treatment process. A wide range of sensors and components that are necessary for this type of a system is available from TME. Apart from measuring, such systems are able to control and also change the settings, i.e. open and close valves, switch between the programme modes, etc. Most of these tasks are automatic, and that is why automation is an important part of these systems – when controlling work processes, CMI&A systems usually use a controller which collects measured data, processes it and then sends appropriate orders to the working elements.

CMI&A cabinet

CMI&A equipment is usually installed in the control cabinet. These types of cabinets are most often made from prefabricated materials, as ordered by the client, in harmony with the design which precisely determines what the whole system is meant to look like. These types of CMI&A projects are usually created for industrial entities by a team of engineers who know a given industry very well and are able to foresee the required CMI&A devices, CMI&A circuits, a proper set of controllers and sometimes even order special software for this particular project and branch of industry. The programme menu which the users will use should meet all the requirements regarding the parameters and ensure a good insight into the controlling of all industrial processes in real time.

 
 

Rules for operating CMI&A systems

The rules of operating the CMI&A systems must be compatible with the manufacturer’s O&MM and with the Network Transmission Code (NTC), which are subject to approval of the person in charge of the system, especially for those power devices where special qualifications are needed. We need to remember that in this case, control and measurement procedures are performed on live devices and are treated as work performed in conditions posing a particular threat to human health and life. They must be done in pairs. Individuals who perform such works must hold special qualifications and skills and also a valid qualification certificate which authorises them to perform such work. The other person must be trained in first aid or hold a valid qualifications certificate.
