Schottky diode - definition

A Schottky diode is a specialized type of semiconductor diode in which the junction is formed not between two semiconductor regions, but between an n-type semiconductor and a metal. This structure creates what is known as a Schottky barrier, which is characterized by a very low forward voltage drop and fast switching times—distinguishing it from conventional p–n junction diodes. Its low forward voltage, typically ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 V, makes the Schottky diode particularly energy-efficient in low-voltage applications.

Due to its construction, the Schottky diode exhibits significantly lower junction capacitance and shorter reverse recovery time, making it ideal for high-frequency applications and systems that require fast switching. It is widely used in switch-mode power supplies, high-efficiency rectifiers, DC-DC converters, and protection circuits, where minimizing power losses and improving overall efficiency are critical.

One of the notable characteristics of a Schottky diode is its higher reverse leakage current compared to standard diodes, which affects its performance in reverse-bias conditions. Depending on the required voltage rating, operating temperature, and environmental robustness, Schottky diodes can be manufactured using different semiconductor materials such as silicon or silicon carbide. In modern electronic systems, Schottky diodes play a vital role in optimizing energy flow and enhancing the power efficiency of electronic devices.
