A Zener diode is a specialized type of semiconductor diode designed to operate in reverse bias within a defined breakdown voltage range, which is precisely set during the manufacturing process. Unlike a standard diode, which blocks current flow in reverse bias until breakdown damage occurs, a Zener diode maintains a stable voltage across its terminals even under significant changes in current once the breakdown threshold is reached. This phenomenon, known as the Zener effect, is primarily used for voltage regulation in electronic circuits.
The operation of a Zener diode is based on controlled breakdown in the p–n junction, which may occur via tunneling (Zener breakdown) or avalanche multiplication, depending on the voltage level. When the reverse voltage reaches the specified Zener voltage, the diode conducts sharply while holding the voltage nearly constant across the junction. This characteristic makes the Zener diode an effective precision voltage regulator, independent of variations in load or supply conditions.
In practical applications, Zener diodes are commonly used for overvoltage protection, as reference elements in linear voltage regulators, and as voltage limiters in signal paths. The selection of a suitable model depends on the breakdown voltage, permissible power dissipation, and temperature stability. The Zener diode is an essential component in the design of reliable and voltage-resilient electronic systems, particularly where accurate control of power supply conditions is required.
