Photoelectric cell (phototube) is an optoelectronic component used to detect the presence of light or changes in its intensity, functioning as a sensor in various automation, security, and control systems. Its operation is based on the photoelectric effect, in which electromagnetic radiation—typically in the visible or infrared range—induces the generation of an electrical signal when it strikes a semiconductor material. Depending on the design and applied technology, a photoelectric cell can respond to continuous, pulsed, or modulated light.
A typical photoelectric cell consists of a transmitter that emits a light beam and a receiver that detects the interruption, attenuation, or reflection of the beam caused by the presence of an object. This system operates without physical contact, enabling rapid and precise detection of moving objects or environmental changes without direct interaction with the monitored element. As a result, photoelectric cells are widely used in safety systems, industrial automation, transport devices, light barriers, and motion-controlled lighting systems.
The advantages of photoelectric cells include high sensitivity, fast response time, and the ability to operate in harsh environmental conditions such as dust, vibration, or variable lighting. Their technical parameters can be tailored to specific applications by selecting appropriate wavelengths, detector types, and signal processing methods. In modern systems, photoelectric cells are often integrated with microcontrollers, enabling advanced data analysis, interference filtering, and seamless integration with other components of intelligent installations.
