Capacitor is a passive component used in electrical and electronic circuits, whose primary function is to accumulate and store energy in an electrostatic field. It consists of two conductive plates separated by a dielectric - an insulating material that allows charge storage while preventing the direct flow of direct current. A capacitor’s ability to store charge is defined as its capacitance and is measured in farads.
The operating principle of a capacitor is based on the polarization of the dielectric under the influence of the electric field formed between the plates, which enables the retention of stored charges and the generation of a potential difference. Current can flow through a capacitor only during voltage changes, which makes it conductive for alternating currents while blocking direct currents in a steady state. This property is widely utilized in filters, signal component separation circuits, converters, and timing circuits.
The type of dielectric and the mechanical construction significantly affect the capacitor's characteristics, such as temperature stability, capacitance tolerance, operating voltage range, and cutoff frequency. Depending on the application, various types of capacitors are used, including ceramic, electrolytic, film, and tantalum capacitors, each with distinct performance parameters. In modern electronics, capacitors also function as filtering elements in power supplies, support reactive power compensation in power systems, and assist in the operation of memory circuits and sensors.
In pulse and high-frequency circuits, capacitors play a critical role in signal shaping and ensuring circuit stability. Their correct selection significantly influences the quality and reliability of electronic systems, whether in consumer devices, industrial applications, or telecommunications solutions.
