Conductance - definition

Conductance is a physical quantity that describes the ability of an element or material to conduct electric current. It is the reciprocal of resistance and is expressed in siemens (S), serving as a measure of how easily electric charges flow through a given object when a voltage is applied. In direct current (DC) circuits, conductance is defined as the ratio of current to voltage, according to Ohm’s law, where G = 1/R, with G denoting conductance and R resistance.

From the perspective of material properties, conductance depends on the type of conducting material, its length, cross-sectional area, and temperature. The lower the electrical resistance of the material, the higher its conductance, meaning it is a more efficient conductor of current. In technical practice, this concept is applied not only to evaluate conductors but also to analyze energy losses, select circuit components, and perform electrical measurements.

In alternating current (AC) systems, conductance constitutes the real part of admittance - a complex quantity describing conduction in circuits that also include reactive elements such as capacitors and inductors. This means that conductance represents the component of conduction that results in actual energy flow, in contrast to the imaginary component associated with energy storage in electric or magnetic fields.

Understanding conductance is crucial in the measurement and analysis of electrical and electronic circuits for proper circuit design, energy efficiency optimization, and evaluation of conduction performance. In industrial applications, conductance is also used to determine the chemical properties of liquids in conductometric analytical methods, where changes in electrical conductivity are used to identify and measure the concentration of ionic substances.
