Laminate is a multilayer composite material created by permanently bonding at least two different layers with distinct mechanical, chemical, or electrical properties. The aim of such a structure is to obtain a material with desired functional characteristics that cannot be achieved using a single raw component. Laminates are widely used in engineering, electronics, construction, and industry, where durability, strength, insulation, or resistance to environmental conditions are required.
In electronics, laminate most commonly refers to the base material used for manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs). It consists of a dielectric layer—typically made from phenolic paper or fiberglass fabric impregnated with epoxy resin—and an outer copper layer, which forms the conductive traces. These types of laminates must exhibit appropriate dielectric properties, thermal stability, low moisture absorption, and chemical resistance to ensure the reliable operation of electronic circuits.
The laminate manufacturing process involves pressing and curing material layers under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. Depending on the application, laminates may be reinforced with structural fibers such as glass, carbon, or aramid, while synthetic resins with carefully selected physicochemical properties serve as the binding agent. The composition and structure of the laminate are tailored to achieve the desired stiffness, flexibility, thermal conductivity, or electrical insulation.
Depending on the technical context, the term laminate may also refer to finishing materials, protective layers, or composites used in aerospace, automotive, or energy sectors. A critical aspect is the proper bonding and durability of the layers, which determine the quality and reliability of the final product in demanding operating environments.
