LED - definition
LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor electroluminescent diode that emits light when an electric current flows through it in the forward direction. This phenomenon, known as electroluminescence, involves the recombination of charge carriers—electrons and holes—within the semiconductor structure, resulting in the emission of photons with a specific wavelength. Depending on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material, an LED can emit light in various colors, including visible, infrared, or ultraviolet ranges.
The structure of an LED is based on a p-n junction made from materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium phosphide (GaP), or gallium nitride (GaN). Modern technologies allow precise control of light color and intensity, as well as the development of multilayer structures that enhance efficiency and component lifespan. LEDs are characterized by very high energy efficiency, long operational life, low operating voltage, and compact size, making them ideal light sources for a wide range of applications.
LEDs are widely used in general lighting, signaling, displays, mobile devices, automotive systems, medical equipment, consumer electronics, and industrial systems. In modern lighting solutions, LEDs have replaced traditional light sources such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps, offering higher energy efficiency and better control over light parameters such as color, directionality, and dimming. High-power LEDs and invisible-light LEDs are also used in specialized applications, including detection systems, data transmission, and biomedical technologies.
