MOS (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) is a semiconductor structure forming the foundation of MOSFET transistors, widely used in modern digital and analog electronics. It consists of three layers: a thin metal layer (nowadays typically polysilicon or a high-conductivity metal), an insulating oxide layer (most commonly silicon dioxide), and a semiconductor substrate (usually n-type or p-type silicon). This configuration enables electrostatic control of current flow in the conductive region within the semiconductor without direct contact with the conducting material, allowing for miniaturization and high operational reliability.
The operating principle is based on inducing a conductive channel in the semiconductor by means of an electric field generated between the gate electrode and the substrate. When voltage is applied to the gate, charge carriers in the semiconductor are attracted or repelled in the region just below the oxide layer, leading to the formation of a conductive channel between the source and drain. The MOS structure thus enables precise current control via voltage without requiring high current in the control circuit.
MOS technology has played a crucial role in the development of integrated circuits, allowing millions of transistors to be implemented on a single chip thanks to high integration density and low power consumption. It laid the foundation for the CMOS (Complementary MOS) family, which combines p-type and n-type transistors and has come to dominate the design of digital logic circuits due to its energy efficiency and high-speed performance. The MOS structure is also used in sensors (e.g., photoelectric MOSFETs), semiconductor memories (e.g., EEPROM, Flash), and analog circuits, making it a cornerstone of modern microelectronics.
