Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is a mechanical and electrical platform for electronic components, designed to arrange and interconnect them via conductive tracks, solder pads, and signal layers made from a thin layer of copper. This structure is embedded in an insulating substrate - typically epoxy-glass laminate, paper-based, or ceramic - which provides mechanical stability, electrical insulation, and resistance to environmental conditions.
PCB technology enables the integration of complex electronic circuits into a compact and organized form, eliminating the need for wired connections between components. Conductive traces are designed with consideration for signal, thermal, and mechanical requirements, and are manufactured using photochemical, mechanical, and multilayer techniques. PCBs can be single-, double-, or multilayered, depending on the circuit complexity and routing demands.
Electronic components are mounted on PCBs using through-hole (THT) or surface-mount (SMT) techniques, with the latter dominating modern manufacturing due to its support for miniaturization and automation. Depending on function and application, PCBs may include additional features such as vias, power planes, electromagnetic shielding, or specialized cooling structures. PCB design requires CAD tools and must comply with standards for safety, reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility.
Printed circuit boards are indispensable in the construction of all electronic devices—from simple consumer circuits to advanced industrial, computing, and military systems. Their versatility, scalability, and compatibility with automated production make PCBs the foundation of modern electronics, both in mass manufacturing and prototyping.
