Resistor - definition

Resistor is a passive electrical circuit component primarily used to limit current flow, divide voltage, and dissipate energy in the form of heat. Its operation is based on the phenomenon of resistance—the property of a material to oppose the movement of free charge carriers. Under ideal conditions, a resistor behaves according to Ohm’s law, meaning that the voltage across its terminals is proportional to the current flowing through it.

From a construction standpoint, resistors are made from materials with precisely defined resistivity, such as carbon, metal oxides, resistive alloys, or metallic films deposited on a ceramic substrate. Their resistance value, expressed in ohms, can be fixed or adjustable—in the case of variable resistors. Key parameters describing a resistor include resistance, tolerance (allowable deviation from the nominal value), power rating, temperature coefficient, and long-term stability.

In engineering practice, resistors perform various critical functions—they limit current in circuit branches, set transistor operating points, form voltage dividers, suppress noise, and provide termination for transmission lines. Their presence in almost every electronic circuit makes them fundamental components in analog and digital electronics, power systems, and automation. Circuit design must consider not only the resistance value but also power dissipation and the influence of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and radiation.

Available in both through-hole (THT) and surface-mount (SMD) versions, resistors are standardized in terms of dimensions and markings, facilitating identification and automated assembly. Their values are read using a color code or numerical markings indicating nominal resistance and tolerance. Due to their simplicity and reliability, resistors remain among the most commonly used components in electronics.
