Embedded system - definition

Embedded system is a specialized computer system designed to perform specific control, monitoring, or processing tasks, integrated within the device it operates. Unlike general-purpose computers, an embedded system functions within a single, often closed environment and is optimized for functionality, reliability, energy efficiency, and production cost. Its architecture may be based on a microcontroller, microprocessor, or programmable logic device, with software typically implemented as firmware.

A defining characteristic of an embedded system is its tight coupling with the hardware in which it resides. Designing such a system requires consideration of both physical constraints and functional requirements—from real-time responsiveness to noise immunity and operational reliability. Depending on the application, the system may run a real-time operating system (RTOS) or operate without one, executing code sequentially or concurrently.

Embedded systems are widely used in industrial automation, automotive systems, telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical devices, and IoT applications. Their tasks include process control, sensor data acquisition, information processing, and communication with other systems. Given the critical nature of many applications, ensuring high reliability, operational safety, and long-term technical support and software updates is essential.

Modern embedded systems increasingly incorporate artificial intelligence, wireless communication, and remote management capabilities, becoming components of larger, distributed architectures such as cyber-physical systems. Their technological evolution promotes miniaturization, energy efficiency, and greater operational autonomy, broadening their applicability in advanced technological solutions.
