Transformer is an electrical power device used to convert alternating current voltage through electromagnetic induction, without altering the frequency. Its primary function is to increase (step-up) or decrease (step-down) the voltage level to suit the requirements of a particular load or transmission system. The transformer operates based on the interaction of magnetic fields in two (or more) windings wound around a common magnetic core, typically made of high-permeability laminated steel sheets.
The operating principle of a transformer is grounded in Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. An alternating current (AC) flowing through the primary winding generates a varying magnetic field, which induces a voltage in the secondary winding. The voltage ratio between input and output is determined by the ratio of turns in the respective windings. This allows for the efficient distribution of electric energy over long distances at high voltages, as well as the safe powering of end devices at lower voltages.
Transformers come in a wide variety of designs and applications — from large power units used in transmission substations, through medium-sized units in industrial installations, to miniature transformers found in electronic devices. Their design considers parameters such as rated voltage, power, electrical insulation, power losses, and cooling, which can be natural (air or oil-based) or forced.
In power systems, transformers enable efficient transmission of electricity by minimizing losses during long-distance transfer. In consumer electronics, they provide galvanic isolation and protection, while in measurement technology they are used to transform signals in differential or impedance-matching circuits. Key operational parameters of a transformer include efficiency, voltage regulation, and resistance to overloads and electromagnetic interference.
