Piezoelectric actuator - definition

Piezoelectric actuator is an executive element that uses the piezoelectric phenomenon to convert an electrical signal into precise mechanical movement. Its operating principle is based on the properties of piezoelectric materials, such as piezoelectric ceramics or quartz crystals, which deform under applied voltage. This deformation, although very small in absolute terms, is characterized by high response speed and repeatability.

In actuators of this type, the piezoelectric material is usually enclosed in a structure that allows it to cyclically expand and contract in response to variable voltage. These changes generate micromovements in the range of nanometers to several micrometers, making piezoelectric actuators used where extreme positioning precision is required – for example, in optics, nanotechnology, atomic force microscopy, or micro-volume liquid dispensing systems.

The advantage of piezoelectric actuators is their very short response time and the absence of mechanical elements with relative motion, which translates into high durability, low wear, and high resistance to environmental conditions. At the same time, due to the limited range of movement, in many applications they are integrated with mechanisms that amplify motion or used as components in hybrid systems.

The characteristics of a piezoelectric actuator include, among others, response nonlinearity, hysteresis, and displacement dependence on temperature, which may require software compensation in more complex control systems. Thanks to the ability to control movement very precisely and the lack of electromagnetic interference emission, actuators of this type are also used in precision printing technologies, precision automation, and research laboratories.
