Electric accumulator is an electrochemical device used for storing energy in chemical form and later releasing it as electrical energy. Its operation is based on reversible chemical reactions occurring between electrodes immersed in an electrolyte. During the charging process, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy and stored inside the accumulator, while during discharging, the reverse process occurs – chemical energy is converted back into electrical energy.
The fundamental feature of an accumulator is its ability to undergo multiple charge and discharge cycles without significant loss of capacity. Depending on the type of active materials and electrolyte used, different types of accumulators are distinguished, such as lead-acid, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), lithium-ion (Li-ion), or lithium-polymer (LiPo). Each of these types is characterized by different operating parameters, including nominal voltage, energy density, cycle life, and charging requirements.
Electric accumulators play a crucial role in modern technology and energy, serving as a power source for a wide range of devices – from mobile phones and laptops to electric vehicles and emergency power systems, as well as energy storage for renewable sources. Their technological development focuses on increasing capacity, reducing weight, shortening charging time, and improving operational safety.
In the context of accumulator operation, phenomena such as self-discharge, memory effect (occurring in some older technologies), chemical aging, and the impact of temperature on the efficiency of the electrochemical process are significant. The operation of accumulators requires consideration of voltage, current, and temperature limitations, which is particularly important in energy management systems and protective electronics.
