Spectrum Analyzers - definition
Spectrum Analyzers is a specialised measurement device for the representation of signals in the frequency domain, allowing a precise analysis of their harmonics and power distribution in the band. Unlike oscilloscopes, which represent signals as a function of time, spectrum Analyzers present data as a function of frequency, showing, which components of a signal have the highest energy significance in a given range.
The principle of a Spectrum Analyzer is based on the transformation of an analogue signal or digital signal to a frequency form, usually using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) or heterodyne circuits. This makes it possible to detect the presence of signals at specific frequencies, evaluation of electromagnetic interference, analysis of modulations, as well as testing emissions in transmitting and receiving equipment.
Spectrum Analyzers are used in a wide range of fields - from telecommunications and radiotechnics, consumer and industrial electronics, to scientific research and EMC monitoring. Thanks to their high frequency resolution and wide dynamic range, they enable the identification of signals even in the presence of strong background noise.
Devices of this type are available in both stationary, and portable versions, and their parameters - such as frequency range, analysis bandwidth, speed sampling rate or sensitivity - are selected depending on the application. Modern Spectrum Analyzers can also be integrated into computer systems, modern spectrum analysers can also be integrated with computer systems, documentation and further processing of data in a digital environment.
