ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is an American non-governmental organisation, which coordinates the development and promotion of technical, industrial and commercial standards in the United States. It acts as an intermediary between the private sector and the federal government, by supporting a voluntary standardisation system, that enables the consistency and interoperability of products, services and systems in Others technical and industrial fields.
ANSI does not develop standards directly, but accredits standards organisations, assures, that their standards development procedures are open, transparent and consensus-based. Through this function, the institute contributes to improving product quality, enhancing user safety and environmental protection, as well as supporting the competitiveness of US companies in international markets.
ANSI represents the United States in international standardisation structures, such as ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). Through this, it participates in the development of global technical standards and promotes compatibility between national and international standards.
ANSI's scope of activities covers numerous industries, including information technology, electronics, energy, telecommunications, mechanical engineering, as well as fields not directly related to technology, such as occupational safety or education. The organisation also supports the development of so-called. open standards, necessary for the development of interoperable technologies and innovative system solutions. In the field of IT, ANSI is known for.inter alia. for its standardised character coding (ANSI encoding), which is an extension of the ASCII.
