Yagi antenna - definition

Yagi antenna is a directional electric antenna designed to work in the range of radio waves, its construction is based on a linear arrangement of several conductive elements, of which only one - the active dipole - is directly supplied with signal. Others elements, i.e. a reflector and one or more directors, have a passive function and are responsible for shaping the radiation pattern, amplifying the signal in the preferred direction.

This solution was developed in the years 20. This solution was developed in the 1990s by Shintaro Uda and Hidetsugu Yagi. Antennas are characterised by their highly directed radiation, which translates into high gain along the axis of operation, with simultaneous suppression of interference from other directions. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for applications, where long-range radio links and directional selectivity are important.

The lengths and arrangements of the individual antenna elements are tailored to a specific wavelength, which allows the antenna to be tuned to a narrow frequency band. Antennas are most often designed to operate in the VHF and UHF bands, e.g. terrestrial television systems, amateur radio or aerial communication systems. In many cases multi-element versions of this antenna are used, which provide even higher energy gain and a better signal-to-noise ratio.

Compared to other types of directional Antennas, Yagi is distinguished by its relatively simple mechanical construction and low weight, which makes it easy to install and rotate in relation to the signal source. Due to its efficiency and availability, the Yagi antenna is one of the most popular choices among users requiring targeted reception or transmission of electromagnetic waves.
