Audion (audion tube) - definition of
Audion is the historical name of the first three-electrode vacuum tube, invented by Lee de Forest in 1906. This device represented a significant breakthrough in electronics technology, as it enabled not only the detection of radio signals, but also to amplify them. The audion consisted of a vacuum bulb containing three electrodes: cathode, anode and a control grid between them. By adding the grid to the earlier Diodes design, it became possible to control the flow of electrons through the device, which initiated the development of electron tubes as active amplification elements.
Audion was instrumental in the development of radio, telephony and the first electronic circuits, because it allowed a significant increase in the range of radio transmission by amplifying signals received from long distances. Although the original design was not entirely gas-free, which affected its performance, over time, it was refined towards full vacuum, creating modern vacuum triodes. Although the audion has been superseded over time by more advanced components, components such as Transistors, its concept remains the foundation of modern electronics.
In a historical context, audion symbolises the transition from passive to active electronic components and the beginning of the age of amplifier circuits and oscillators. It was thanks to him that the first functional radio receivers and long-range communication systems could be constructed. Audion paved the way for the further development of semiconductor technology and was an indispensable component of early computers, radars and signal transmission systems.
