Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is a technique used in electronic systems aimed at maintaining a relatively constant output signal level, regardless of significant changes in the amplitude of the input signal. AGC is one of the key solutions in receiver circuits, especially in radio technology, audio systems, television, and measuring equipment, where the signal amplitude can dynamically change over time depending on transmission conditions, distance, or attenuation.
The operation of automatic gain control is based on analyzing the output signal level, which is used to control the gain of the signal path in such a way as to maintain the desired signal level. If the input signal amplitude increases, the AGC system reduces the gain, and when the signal weakens, it increases it. This process occurs continuously and dynamically, often using feedback. The AGC system can operate in both analog and digital domains, using adaptive filters and variable gain amplifiers.
In radio communication systems, AGC plays a crucial role in ensuring signal clarity and protecting against receiver overload. In sound engineering, it allows for leveling the sound level from different sources, enhancing listening comfort. In modern digital devices, AGC algorithms can be part of a larger signal processing system, where maintaining the appropriate signal level is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of analog-to-digital converters and subsequent stages of analysis.
