Barograph is a precise meteorological instrument used for continuously recording changes in atmospheric pressure over time. It is an advancement of the classic aneroid barometer by adding a data recording mechanism, which allows documenting the dynamics of pressure changes on a graph—most often in the form of a line drawn on a rotating drum with paper tape or another recording medium. The essential element of the barograph is a set of connected aneroid chambers (metal vacuum boxes), which deform under the influence of changes in external pressure.
The geometric changes of the system are mechanically amplified and transmitted to the recording system, usually through a system of levers, gears, and compensating springs, to enable faithful reproduction of subtle pressure fluctuations. The rotation speed of the cylinder with the paper chart is controlled by a mechanical or electronic clock, ensuring precise representation of temporal variability.
Modern barographs may be equipped with pressure transducers and electronic systems enabling digital data recording, allowing for further processing, analysis, and integration with weather forecasting systems or geophysical applications. Barographs are used in meteorology, aviation, atmospheric research, hydrology, and scientific applications related to the analysis of microclimates and dynamic phenomena, such as pressure waves accompanying storms, atmospheric fronts, or explosions. The construction of a barograph must ensure high sensitivity and temperature stability, as well as resistance to mechanical disturbances, to enable reliable recording of long-term atmospheric pressure trends.
