BASIC (English: Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) is a high-level programming language designed in the mid-1960s at Dartmouth College by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz. BASIC was developed with the aim of making programming easy for non-specialists in computer science, which is why its syntax and structure were simplified compared to professional languages of that era.
Initially, BASIC was intended to be universal and available on academic computers, which contributed to its popularization in education. Over time, it underwent many variations and interpretations, particularly in the 1980s when it became one of the most common languages in home personal computers. It was widely used in systems such as MSX, Commodore, ZX Spectrum, and also in DOS environments as QBASIC or GW-BASIC.
Technically, BASIC is an imperative language based on a linear structure, which over time acquired capabilities for structured, modular, and even object-oriented programming in more modern implementations such as Visual Basic. This language allows operations on variables, performing mathematical operations, input and output data processing, as well as implementing conditional logic and control loops.
Although BASIC has largely been supplanted by other languages in professional applications, it remains an important milestone in the history of computer education and the development of personal computers. Thanks to its simplicity, many users began learning programming, influencing the development of digital skills across entire generations.
