Functional safety is the property of technical systems characterised by their ability to function in a predictable way, even in the event of component failures. The term refers to the protection of life, health and property through the design, implementing and supervising measures to prevent the consequences of potential functional faults in systems of automation, control systems and industrial and consumer electronics.
The concept of functional safety is closely linked to international standards, such as the IEC 61508, which define the basis for the design of safety-related systems. Within these standards, Safety Integrity Levels (SIL - Safety Integrity Levels) are of key importance Safety Integrity Level), which defines the required reliability of safety mechanisms. Solutions meeting the functional safety criteria must be robust to random errors, and respond in a controlled manner to anticipated failure conditions.
In practice, functional safety is used in industrial process control systems, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, transport infrastructure or energy. Designing such systems requires risk analysis, verification of the hardware and software architecture and continuous monitoring and validation of their operation. The aim is not only to prevent failures, but also to ensure, that potential failures do not become a threat to users and the environment.
Functional safety includes both technical, as well as organisational, such as design responsibility, documentation according to certification requirements, or test procedures. Reliability and predictability of functionally safe systems are fundamental to the legal and ethical responsibilities of technology manufacturers and operators.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
