A Data Block is the basic organisational unit of information used in computer systems to store, transmit and process data. It represents a defined, logically consistent portion of fixed or variable length information that is treated as a whole in the context of disk operations, network transmissions or memory management.
In file systems, a data block is the smallest portion of data that a system can physically store on a storage medium, e.g. a hard disk or SSD. The size of this block - the so-called system block size - affects the efficiency of disk space use and the speed of I/O operations. Too large a size can lead to wasted space (so-called internal fragmentation) and too small a size can lead to excessive I/O operations.
In operational memory, data blocks are important for resource management by the operating system, especially in the context of memory allocation and release, or in the operation of caches. In Computer Networks, a data block can represent a segment transmitted within a communication protocol frame, where it contains user information and control data such as headers, checksums or identifiers.
In the context of databases and programming, a data block is sometimes a logical structure, containing a set of records, variables or pointers used during data writing, reading and processing operations in memory or on disk. In many systems, such as PLCs or embedded systems, the term refers to an ordered address space with input, output or temporary data processed by control applications.
The data block is therefore a universal concept in computer science and digital electronics, relevant to the efficiency of systems, data integrity and logical ordering of data.
