Buzzer - definition

The Beeper is a small electro-acoustic component that converts an electrical signal into a fixed or modulated frequency sound. It is commonly used as a signalling component in Instrumentation and Automation, acting as a warning, information or confirmation of system operation. The buzzer's operation is usually based on piezoelectric or electromagnetic phenomena, depending on the technology used.

Piezoelectric buzzers use a piezoelectric material that, when energised, changes its dimensions, causing the sound-generating membrane to vibrate. This type of design has low power consumption and long life, making it particularly useful in battery-powered devices. Electromagnetic buzzers, on the other hand, work on the principle of attraction and repulsion of the diaphragm by means of a magnetic field generated by an alternating current flowing through a coil.

These components can come in active or passive versions. Active versions contain a built-in signal generator and require only a power supply to operate. Passive versions require an external signal source of the appropriate frequency, allowing precise control of the emitted sound.

Buzzers are widely used in alarm systems, household appliances, clocks, industrial controllers, HMI Panels and medical equipment. Their characteristics include a fast response and the ability to generate acoustic signals of varying intensity and tone, allowing them to be used both as fault sounders and as elements of user interfaces. When designing buzzer systems, it is important to take into account the electrical and acoustic parameters of the buzzer as well as the mounting method.
