Centroid - definition

A Centroid is a geometric point that represents the centre of mass of a plane figure or solid in the case of a uniform distribution of mass. In Euclidean geometry, it is the point where the diagonals of a triangle intersect, as well as the centre of gravity of a body of uniform density. In two-dimensional spaces, the centroid is determined as the arithmetic mean of the coordinates of all the points forming the figure, while in three-dimensional spaces, calculations also take into account the third dimension.

In data analysis, the centroid plays an important role in clustering algorithms such as k-means (k-means), where it represents a dataset or cluster. In this context, the centroid defines the central position of a group of objects in a multidimensional feature space, facilitating classification and interpretation of the data. Its position is updated iteratively during the operation of the algorithm, aiming to minimise the intra-group distance.

In signal processing, the centroid can denote the centre of gravity of the signal spectrum, and in image analysis, the centre of brightness or mass of an area. In engineering and physics applications, it is used to model the behaviour of mechanical structures, to determine moments of inertia and to study the equilibrium of systems.

From a mathematical point of view, the centroid is characterised by the property that the total moment about this point for a homogeneous mass distribution is equal to zero. In practice, its determination may require the use of integration, especially for objects of irregular shape or variable density. In computer applications, coordinate averaging pixels or data vectors is often used.
