Stepping characteristics is a way of describing the response of a dynamic system to a unit-step forcing, i.e. a sudden change in the input signal from zero to a constant value. Analysing this type of response allows us to determine how a system responds to sudden perturbations or changes in operating conditions. It is one of the basic tools in systems engineering Automation, electronics and control theory.
In practice, spike characteristics are represented as a graph of the output signal as a function of time after a spike has been applied. Its shape depends on the dynamic properties of the object under test, such as inertia, damping, delay or the presence of energy storage elements. In first-order systems, the step response takes the form of an exponential ramp-up, while in higher-order systems oscillations, overshoots or longer settling times may occur.
Step characteristics are important for both analogue and digital systems, and their analysis allows for the assessment of stability, speed of response and quality of control. In system identification methods, they allow the parameters of a mathematical model of an object to be estimated. In Automation, they are often used to select the settings of regulators such as PID, where the spike response plays a key role in the tuning process.
The characteristic is also used in the diagnostics of Instrumentation and mechatronic systems, as any deviation from the predicted response can indicate damage or changes in the parameters of system components. In digital systems, it is analysed from sampled data, which requires the use of numerical tools and smoothing filters to correctly interpret the results.
