Propagation time - definition

Propagation time is a physical quantity that defines the delay between the moment a signal is transmitted and its arrival at the reception point in a specific transmission medium. This parameter is of key importance in telecommunications, digital electronics and computer systems, where the speed of data processing and synchronisation of signals are important. In the context of logic circuits, it refers to the time that elapses between a change in the input state and the appearance of a corresponding change of state at the output.

In transmission environments such as electrical cables, optical fibres or radio channels, the propagation time depends on the properties of the medium, more specifically on its phase velocity, which in turn is determined by the dielectric and magnetic permeability of the material. The higher the signal velocity in a given medium, the shorter the propagation time per unit length. In practice, it is assumed that in electrical cables signals propagate at a speed close to 2/3 the speed of light in a vacuum, while in optical fibres they propagate at a slightly lower value.

In digital electronics, the propagation time of a logic gate or other Integrated circuits component affects the maximum operating frequency of the entire system. The constraints imposed by signal propagation are particularly important in the design of synchronous circuits, where timing consistency between control and data signals is required. Non-uniformity of propagation times can lead to logic errors, critical delays or the phenomenon of so-called timing gambles. Propagation time is also analysed in the context of the design of Computer Networks, where it affects the quality of connections and the response time of applications in distributed systems.
