Piezoelectric sensor - definition

A Piezoelectric Sensor is a measuring element that uses the piezoelectric phenomenon to convert mechanical pressure, vibration, force or acceleration into an electrical signal. The operation of the sensor is based on the properties of piezoelectric materials which, in response to mechanical deformation, generate an electrical charge proportional to the applied force. This phenomenon occurs in some natural crystals (e.g. quartz) and in ceramic materials produced synthetically.

In the structure of a piezoelectric sensor, the most important element is a layer of piezoelectric material, often connected to electrodes and enclosed in a suitable mechanical housing. When the material is deformed by a force, a charge shift occurs in its crystal structure, resulting in a potential difference between the electrodes. This signal can be further amplified, filtered and analysed by electronic systems.

Sensors of this type are used in applications requiring high sensitivity, a wide dynamic range and resistance to extreme environmental conditions. They are used in mechanical engineering, machine diagnostics, safety systems, medicine and consumer technology, where they are used to detect touch, vibration or pressure pulses. Due to their design, piezoelectric sensors are particularly effective in dynamic measurements, while they are less suitable for detecting static forces, as the accumulated charge is gradually dissipated.
