DSSS - definition

DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) is a technique for modulation and signal transmission in wireless communication systems, which involves spreading the spectrum of the usable signal using a pseudo-random sequence at a much higher frequency than the original information signal. As a result of this process, the signal power is spread over a wider frequency band, increasing the transmission's resistance to interference, eavesdropping and interference.

A key element of DSSS is the spreading code, also known as the spreading sequence or PN (Pseudo-Noise) code. Each bit of data is multiplied by a sequence of higher frequency bits, creating what are known as chips. This process causes the signal to occupy a much wider bandwidth than that required to transmit the information, making it difficult for third parties to detect and interfere with it. On the receiving side, the signal is reconstructed by correlating with the same PN sequence, restoring the original data.

Thanks to its scattering properties, DSSS is immune to narrowband interference and allows multiple channels to coexist in the same frequency range. The technique is used, among others, in GPS systems, mobile telephony and wireless communication standards such as IEEE 802.11b. For military and specialised applications, DSSS offers an additional layer of security due to the difficulty of intercepting and analysing the signal without knowledge of the scatter code.

Compared to other spread spectrum techniques, DSSS has a relatively simple implementation and high transmission quality in noisy environments. The performance of DSSS depends on the parameters of the PN code, synchronisation of the receiver and the quality of the transmission path.
