Dissipation of energy (energy dispersion) - definition

Energy dissipation (energy scattering) is a physical phenomenon involving the irreversible transformation of useful energy, most often mechanical or electrical, into thermal energy, which is dispersed into the environment. This process occurs in many dynamic and material systems, resulting from the action of resistance forces, friction, electrical resistance, or vibration damping.

In electronics, dissipation primarily refers to power losses in the form of heat emitted by active and passive components. An example is the resistance of a conductor through which current flows, leading to heat emission according to Joule's law. In power circuits, amplifiers, power transistors, and integrated circuits, these losses must be considered in both design calculations and the selection of appropriate cooling systems. This parameter is often referred to as power loss or dissipated power and is expressed in watts (W).

In mechanics and materials engineering, energy scattering occurs in damping and viscoelastic structures, where part of the kinetic energy is absorbed and converted into heat due to internal material deformation. Such behavior is crucial in designing damping systems, structural elements exposed to dynamic loads, and vibration isolation systems.

Energy dissipation affects the efficiency of technical systems as well as their durability and reliability. It necessitates the use of temperature-resistant materials, designs minimizing losses, and heat management techniques. It is an inherent aspect of real processes where energy is not entirely conserved in mechanical, electrical, or potential form but is partially dispersed in the environment.
