Ennoda - definition

The Ennode (English: nonode) is a electron tube containing nine electrodes, designed primarily for advanced radio and television applications. It is a development of the idea of multi-electrode vacuum tubes such as the hexode or octode, offering greater functionality in a single vacuum element. The structure of the enode allows complex functions to be realised in a single device, which allowed the simplification of electronic circuits in an era before the widespread use of transistors.

A typical enode contains cathode, anode and a set of control, shielding and modulating grids that work together to achieve proper signal amplification, detection or frequency mixing. The nine-electrode array can be used to create more complex functions than those offered by earlier tube types, such as pentodes or heptodes. Ennodes were sometimes designed as heterodyne elements or signal mixers in superheterodyne receivers, where it was important to reduce the number of components while maintaining high performance.

Due to their complex internal design, these types of tubes were relatively more difficult to manufacture and more expensive, limiting their use to more sophisticated consumer and professional devices. From a technical point of view, the enode allows precise control of the electron flow between the cathode and the anode through appropriate voltages applied to the grids, enabling functions such as amplitude modulation, frequency mixing, or amplification of high-frequency signals. Nowadays, ennodes are rare solutions, being rather the object of historical research and the interest of collectors of tube technology.
