European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) - definition

The European Organisation For Nuclear Research (Conseil Européen Pour La Recherche Nucléaire, CERN) is one of the largest and most prestigious scientific institutions in the world, specialising in fundamental research in particle physics. It was established in 1954 by international agreement as an intergovernmental research organisation based in Meyrin near Geneva, on the border between Switzerland and France. Although its original name referred to nuclear research, CERN now focuses on high-energy physics and the structure of the fundamental constituents of matter.

CERN conducts experimental and theoretical research aimed at understanding the fundamental forces of nature and the particles that make up the universe. The organisation's key research infrastructure is its particle accelerators, including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest and most advanced particle accelerator in the world. The LHC allows protons and heavy ions to collide at energies of up to many teraelectron volts, simulating conditions just after the Big Bang.

CERN has numerous international teams of scientists and engineers from dozens of countries collaborating on the design and operation of particle detectors, analysis of experimental data and the development of information technology. One of CERN's most important achievements was the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, which confirmed the predictions of the Standard Model and was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physics.

In addition to its scientific activities, CERN also acts as a centre for technological innovation. It was at CERN that the concept of the World Wide Web was born, and its computing infrastructure is one of the largest distributed data processing systems in the world. The organisation supports the development of young scientists, runs educational programmes and promotes open scientific cooperation across national and cultural boundaries.
