An Inverter is a power electronic device used to convert voltage or direct current (DC) into voltage or alternating current (AC) with adjustable frequency and amplitude. Its primary function is to generate sinusoidal waveforms, close to the mains voltage, or pulsed waveforms, tailored to the specific requirements of the load. In this way, inverters make it possible to power and control AC motors and to power devices from DC installations such as photovoltaic systems or batteries.
Inverters use fast-switching semiconductor elements - such as IGBT transistors, MOSFETs or Thyristors - to create modulated voltage and current waveforms. Modern designs commonly use pulse width modulation (PWM), which allows the output waveform to be efficiently shaped with specific parameters. These pulses are controlled using digital algorithms, allowing the characteristics of the inverter to be precisely adapted to dynamic operating conditions.
In drive systems, inverters allow the speed and torque of asynchronous and synchronous motors to be smoothly controlled, increasing energy efficiency and precision Automation. In renewable energy, they are used to convert energy from photovoltaic panels and wind turbines into electricity compatible with the electricity grid.
Others divide inverters into different types based on the number of phases, circuit topology and direction of energy flow. There are One Phase Inverters, Three Phase Inverters, stand-alone inverters and grid-tied inverters, as well as so-called reverse inverters, which can operate in both directions, allowing energy to be returned to the grid or to the source.
The operating parameters of the inverter, such as frequency range, efficiency, disturbance level or cooling method, depend on its purpose and industrial class. Advanced devices of this type are equipped with protection circuits, digital communication systems and diagnostic and adaptive functions, allowing them to be integrated into modern control and energy management systems.
