Digital filter - definition

A Digital Filter is a mathematical circuit or algorithm used to process discrete digital signals to isolate, attenuate or modify specific frequency components. Unlike analogue filters, which operate on continuous signals in real time, digital filters operate on sampled numerical data and are implemented by software or hardware in digital signal processing (DSP) systems.

The operation of a digital filter is based on the analysis and transformation of the input signal using discrete arithmetic operations such as multiplication, addition and time shifting. The key features of a filter are its amplitude and phase characteristics, which describe how the filter affects the different frequency components of the signal. The design of digital filters requires the determination of parameters such as cut-off frequency, slope and level of attenuation in the stop band.

Digital filters fall into two main classes: finite impulse response (FIR) filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. FIRs are always stable and have linear phase characteristics, making them suitable for applications requiring precise signal phase mapping. IIRs, on the other hand, are more computationally efficient, but may require additional stabilisation treatments.

Digital filters are widely used in telecommunications, audio, medical imaging, data analysis measurement, radar and control systems. Their flexibility, adaptability and resistance to hardware noise make them a fundamental part of today's digital technologies. In real systems, their implementation requires synchronisation with sampling of the signal and an appropriate choice of calculation precision, especially in systems with limited computational resources.
