A Galvanometer is a precision measuring device used to detect and measure very low electric current intensities. Its operation is based on the action of electromagnetic forces resulting from the flow of current through a conductor located in a magnetic field. The most classical galvanometer design is the magneto-electric galvanometer, in which a coil suspended in a constant magnetic field undergoes a deflection proportional to the current flowing through it, and the amount of deflection is indicated by a moving pointer on a scale.
The sensitivity of a galvanometer is defined by the instrument's ability to detect very small values of current, making it an indispensable tool in precision laboratory measurements, calibration of scientific apparatus and low-current circuit analysis. In practice, mirrored galvanometers are also used, where the deflection of the coil is read optically through the reflection of the light beam, allowing even more accurate measurements with minimal impact friction mechanical.
The galvanometer, the prototype of modern analogue meters, is used not only as a stand-alone device but also as an integral component in the design of Ammeters, Voltmeters and measuring bridges, where it is used to detect the equilibrium point. In modern electronic systems, the role of the classic galvanometer has largely been taken over by semiconductor sensors and analogue-to-digital converters, but it remains indispensable in applications requiring extreme measurement precision. Galvanometers are also the basis for the operation of some laser scanners and optical systems, where the rapid and precise tilting of mirrors allows the direction of the light beam to be controlled.
