Single pole generator - definition

A Single Pole Generator, also known as a Faraday generator, is a specific type of electrical generator that produces electrical voltage due to the direct movement of a conductor in a constant magnetic field, without changing the polarity of the magnetic flux with respect to the conductor. Unlike traditional alternating current (AC) generators, where the voltage is induced by an alternating magnetic flux, in a unipolar generator the electromotive induction occurs by rotational motion in a constant magnetic field, generating a current with a constant direction.

The basic design involves a conductor (usually in the form of a disc or cylinder) rotating around an axis in a magnetic field produced by permanent magnets or solenoids. The line of action of the electromotive force is constant with respect to the generator design, eliminating the need for classical commutators, although brushes are often used to collect current from the rotating disc.

Single-pole generators are characterised by their simplicity of design and their ability to generate very high currents at relatively low voltages, making them of interest for specialised research and experimental applications, for example in the fields of plasma physics and high-current technologies.

Although their practical application in conventional power generation is limited due to technological difficulties associated with efficient current collection and high mechanical and thermal losses, unipolar generators have played an important role in the development of electromagnetism theory. Experiments with them have led to a better understanding of the fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction and form the basis for research into alternative methods of generating electricity. In modern theoretical research, the unipolar generator is also analysed in the context of very high efficiency systems and contactless energy conversion systems.
