Quartz generators - definition

A Quartz Generator is a specialised electronic circuit used to generate an electrical signal at a very stable frequency, used in applications requiring precise timing, such as microprocessor systems, communication devices, electronic clocks and measuring instruments. Its key component is a quartz resonator, made of appropriately cut quartz crystal (SiO₂), which exploits the piezoelectric phenomenon - the material's ability to generate electrical voltage under the influence of mechanical deformation and, conversely, mechanical deformation in response to an applied electrical field.

When a Quartz crystals resonator is excited by an AC voltage, it is set into oscillation at a frequency characteristic of its geometric dimensions and the way the crystal is cut. Due to its extremely high resonant goodness (Q) and minimal susceptibility to changes in temperature, voltage and other external factors, Quartz generators provide exceptional frequency stability, often on the order of parts per million (ppm) or better.

In a typical quartz generator design, the crystal is part of an amplifier circuit that sustains the oscillations, converting them into a usable output signal. Others excitation circuit configurations are used, such as Colpitts, Pierce or Butler circuits, depending on frequency and stability requirements.

Advanced variants of Quartz crystals generators include TCXO (Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) and OCXO (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator) oscillators, which further compensate for temperature variations or keep the resonator in a stable thermal environment for maximum precision operation. Quartz generators are fundamental components in the construction of time synchronisation systems, digital communications and high-frequency radio devices.
