A Glitch is a brief, unwanted signal disturbance typically found in digital circuits or control systems. It can take the form of an impulsive change in logic state that does not correspond to the intended operation of a program, circuit or device. This phenomenon usually occurs as a result of unsynchronised signals, timing differences in the propagation of pulses or electromagnetic interference.
In digital electronics, glitch typically occurs at the output of logic gates, when the input signals change in a non-synchronous manner. For a brief moment, the circuit may go into an abnormal logic state before it stabilises according to the intended algorithm. Such uncontrolled pulses can lead to errors in data processing, malfunctioning of counters, registers, and difficult-to-detect system errors.
In real-time systems and devices with high reliability requirements, glitch can interfere with safety, communication or synchronisation systems. Hence, its detection and elimination is an important aspect of the design of digital electronics, microcontrollers and FPGAs. Timing filters, synchronisation techniques, and signal propagation delay-tolerant circuit design, among others, are used to mitigate glitches.
In a broader context beyond digital technology, the term is sometimes used to describe any unexpected and transient anomaly in the operation of systems - from graphics display errors, to unpredictable software responses, to minor glitches in user interfaces. In each of these cases, the common characteristics of a glitch remain its temporariness, difficulty of replication and potentially significant impact on system performance.
