A Hallotron, also known as a Hall Sensor, is a semiconductor sensing element based on a physical phenomenon called the Hall effect, which occurs when carriers of an electric charge moving in a conductor or a semiconductor under the influence of an electric field are deflected by an external magnetic field. The effect of this deflection is to create a transverse voltage - the Hall voltage - measured perpendicular to the direction of current flow and the magnetic induction vector.
In a Hall effect structure, the flowing current generates a line of charge carriers that are deflected in the presence of a magnetic field, creating a potential difference between the two edges of the sensor. The magnitude of this voltage is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field and to the strength of the supply current, allowing precise measurement of the magnetic field without mechanical contact with the object.
Hall Sensors are widely used in mechatronics, automation systems, automotive, consumer electronics and measuring devices. They are used, among other things, for angular position detection, speed measurement (e.g. in magnetic encoders), current monitoring, and in non-contact switches. Thanks to their high resistance to vibration, wear and mechanical interference, hallotrons are used wherever reliability and longevity are a priority.
In modern integrated circuits designs, hallotrons are often integrated with signal conditioning circuits, amplifiers, analogue-to-digital converters and communication interfaces, allowing them to be directly integrated into microcontrollers in embedded systems. Thanks to their miniaturisation and low power requirements, Hall Sensors also play a key role in Internet of Things (IoT) technology and mobile devices.
